OPPORTUNITY:

As utilities are a major expense for restaurant operations, McDonald’s Australia has been exploring energy efficiency improvement opportunities in its restaurants. HVAC systems represent one of the largest opportunities in this area because they account for approximately
25 percent of a McDonald’s Australia restaurant’s consumption.

SOLUTION:

McDonald’s Australia optimized the energy efficiency of its refrigeration equipment and HVAC systems by installing the product IceCOLD®. IceCOLD® improves the efficiency of the heat exchanges by removing the naturally occurring oil fouling from the tubing and coil walls. As a result, cooler air flow is generated from the system. The shortest payback is achieved on equipment more than three years old.

RESULTS:

The initial results indicated a 20 percent energy savings on HVAC and refrigeration.

IceCOLD® Tests and Installations Have Achieved 20%+ Reduction in the Consumption of Diesel Fuel Used to Operate Refrigerated Trailer Units

The typical cost to treat a refrigeration trailer with IceCOLD® is $1,032.00. According to Thermo King, the most fuel efhcient RTU will consume .8 gallons of diesel per hour. In a typical 12 hour day a RTU will consume 9.6 gallons of fuel or 57.6 gallons in a 6 day work week. Assuming that the average price of diesel fuel is $4.00 per gallon this would equal a cost of $921.60 per month. A 20% reduction in fuel consumption would equal $184.32 savings per month or $2,211.84 per year. The payback on the one time investment would be less than
6 months.

For a 50 trailer fleet operating 24 hours a day the payback would be around 3 months. Total annual fuel saving would be around $221,184.00 for a one time cost of $51,600.00. This would equal a reduction of over 55,000 gallons of fuel consumption in one year.
Buming through a gallon of diesel fuel produces 22.2 pounds of CO2. By reducing annual fuel consumption of the RTU fleet by over 55,000 gallons, a company could reduce CO2 emissions by over 1.2 million pounds every year.

Installing IceCOLD® in 1,000 truck cab air conditioners, can save $660,000 in fuel costs, every year, for the life of the trucks.

When IceCOLD® is installed, a truck running 100,000 miles a year at 6 MPG, on $4.00 diesel will save $660.00 a year in fuel. The cost to install one ounce of IceCOLD® is $150.00, with payback in 3 months.

  • 1% fuel savings = $660 per truck per year.
  • 1000 trucks = $660,000 per year = 3 month payback.

In this example 3.7 million pounds of C02 will be saved every year, for the life of the refer compressors, for the entire 1000 lmck fleet.
