SIMPLE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR IceCOLD®

IceCOLD® is installed at 10% of the total volume of the compressor oil. Some few compressor serial plates will have the oil charge on them. Compressor installation/repair/operation manuals usually will have the oil charge in them. Online search for Make and Model number specifications can confirm oil charge. You can find the compressor make and model number from the serial plate on the compressor or you can determine the make and model number of the condensing unit from its serial plate. Simply look up the make and model number on Google. For instance, look up: Trane 3DB3-1000-TDC: If this does not get you the specifications try: 3DB3 or Trane 3DB3 or 3DB3-1000. Keep trying combos. Specifications 3DB3; Specifications Trane 3DB3; Specifications Trane 3DB3-1000. 95% of the time you will find the total oil charge for the compressor. Failing all this, go with installing one ounce per ton, but usually never under two ounces. NOTE: one ton PTACs and mini splits have an oil charge of 18 to 22+ ounces; so even at one ton, they need two ounces of IceCOLD®.

Instructions for Installing IceCOLD® in a semi hermetic compressor or a (rare) hermetic compressor with a site gauge and an oil drain port:

  • Have the AC tech put his gauges on the system while running and stabilized, record the high pressure, low pressure, amps draw and compressor head temperature (top of the top head casting will do).
  • Assure that the system is operating to factory specifications. CHECK OIL PRESSURE!!!!! Record return air and supply air temperature.
  • Record the outside air temperature and the date and time.
  • Assure that the oil has been changed recently and the oil filters and the refrigerant filters.
  • If equipment appears to be neglected, dirty, suspect that the condensing coil and the evaporator coil have never been cleaned. If the coils are dirty, make sure they get cleaned.
  • Stop the system, drain out 10 (example) ounces of old compressor oil from each compressor and have each tested separately.
  • Add 10 (example) ounces of IceCOLD® to the low side service port using pump or dye cup. Make sure the pump and hose are surgically clean. Flush out with 91% rubbing alcohol, followed with two ounces of R11 if in doubt (standard pump flush).
  • Start the systems; watch the pressures for an hour or so.
  • Tell the local maintenance man to watch the compressor oil sight gauges every few days; if the system starts to be overfull (oil level to the top of the site gauge) have him drain it back to the middle of the sight gauge. The IceCOLD® may return as much as a liter or more of oil-fouling.
  • In two or three weeks, have the AC tech put his gauges on the system and record high pressure, low pressure , amps draw and compressor head temperature (top of the top head will do).

Instructions for installing IceCOLD® in hermetic systems with no site gauge and no oil drain port:

  • As above, have the AC tech put his gauges on the system while running and stabilized to record high pressure, low pressure, amps draw.
  • Assure that the system is operating to factory specifications.
  • Make SURE the refrigerant filter looks “new”. If the filter is an “old,” do not install IceCOLD®. The filter must look at least as new as the compressor
  • Do not install IceCOLD® if the system has no refrigeration filter. Record return air and supply air temperature.
  • Check the oil pressure if it is possible (larger hermetic systems may have an oil pressure port).
  • Record the outside air temperature, date and time.
  • Assure condensing coil and the evaporator coil are clean.
  • If the coils are dirty, make sure they get cleaned.
  • DO NOT DRAIN ANY OIL FROM HERMETIC COMPRESSORS unless it has a site gauge and a drain port.
  • With the compressor running, slowly add 5 (example) ounces of IceCOLD® to the low side service port – be careful NOT to overcharge the system when the IceCOLD® displaces an equal weight of liquid refrigerant and may cause an overfill situation with resulting poor cooling performance. This is why it is necessary to gauge the system after installing IceCOLD® and reset the superheat 3 weeks after installing IceCOLD®.
  • Watch the refrigerant pressures for an hour or so.
  • Tell the maintenance man to check the refrigerant pressures at two and 4 weeks.
